Cantonese Opera in BC over 150 years ago

Can you imagine that as early as in the 1860s, Victoria could boast about having 5 theatres staging Cantonese opera? Imagine the community and its economy in BC that could maintain five live theatres to entertain fans of that traditional performance art. Opera troupes from South China had been crossing the Pacific to perform in North America before CPR was completed and before Canada became a country!PCHC-MoM Society is delighted to co-present "Multi Voices One Heart: Celebrating Canada 150 in Cantonese Opera", a trans-Pacific project involving Hong Kong, Vancouver and Toronto -- 3 cities linked by the rich history of Chinese migration to Canada and the resultant exchange of people and culture. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about this rich heritage that has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humankind.
