In Memoriam: Colonel Howe Lee

A native of Armstrong, BC and a third-generation Chinese-Canadian with a distinguished military career of 35 years, Army Colonel (Ret.) Howe Lee had served as the Commanding Officer of 156 Company, RCASC, the 2I/C of The Royal Westminster Regiment, the CO of the 12th Service Battalion, and in numerous staff positions with Brigade. He concluded his military service with an appointment as Honorary Colonel of the 39 Service Battalion.

Col. Lee was also the founder and first president of the Chinese Canadian Military Museum which was established in November 1998. Among the many contributions to our community, he often visited schools to share the stories of the Chinese Canadian veterans. He also supported and visited the Barkerville Historic Town and Park that includes a rich heritage Chinatown site and collection, and attended the official opening of the "Across The Pacific" exhibition at the Burnaby Village Museum. Just two years ago, the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC celebrated and recognized Col. Lee for his service and dedication.

A dear friend of PCHC, Col. Lee said to our Executive Director: "Winnie, we need to turn that empty lot across (from the building that houses the Chinese Canadian Military Museum) into an intercultural hub where we can uncover and share missing chapters in our official history."

On top of all of his community engagement and passion for storytelling, Col. Lee was a dedicated math and science teacher for 40 years, entirely in the City of Burnaby at Edmonds, Burnaby South and Alpha Secondary.

Col. Howe Lee inspired many and will be sorely missed by all.
