All Our Father's Relations: A New Resource for Teachers

Including Indigenous content across the K-12 curriculum is now a mandatory requirement in BC, but many teachers feel under-equipped to provide the guidance expected from them.In response to this need, and in line with our aim to create intercultural dialogue and resources, PCHC-MoM has been hard at work with the team behind the 2016 award-winning documentary All Our Father's Relations (祖根父脈) to demonstrate how educators can use this film as a learning tool in their lesson planning, staff training, or educational programming.All Our Father's Relations tells the story of the Grant siblings who journey from Vancouver to China in an attempt to rediscover their father’s roots and better understand his fractured relationship with their Musqueam mother. Raised primarily in the traditions of the Musqueam people, the Grant family and their story reveals the shared struggles of migrants and Aboriginal peoples today and in the past.We are excited to announce two screenings and workshops in April and May where we will launch this new resource:(1) Pro-D Opportunity: All Our Father’s Relations (film and conversation)Facilitated by Leanne McColl, Teacher Consultant, and film producer Sarah LingApril 27 | 12:30 pm - 2:30 pmBurnett Secondary School, 5011 Granville Ave, RichmondThis Pro-D opportunity is targeted towards secondary social studies teachers across Richmond School District No. 38, but is open to all teachers who are interested. Find out more and register here for teachers in SD38. This event is funded by a Multiculturalism Grant from the BC Government.(2) All Our Father’s Relations: Exploring a New Learning Tool for Educators & FacilitatorsFree screening and workshop presented by film producer Sarah LingMay 5 | 1:30 pm - 3:30 pmUBC Learning Exchange, 612 Main St, VancouverThis public film screening and workshop is targeted towards educators and facilitators. The discussion, together with a brochure we are creating to highlight the film’s themes in an educational context, will help educators determine how they can use All Our Father’s Relations as a new learning tool to discuss Indigenous and/or Asian content.
