If you're someone who is interested in stories of place and migration, wants to get involved with local communities, and would like to build career-related experience within a non-profit organization, then this could be the job for you.calendar-2018-3070533_640Position:Event Planning and Program AssistantAbout Us:The Pacific Canada Heritage Centre - Museum of Migration Society (PCHC-MoM) is a non-profit organization committed to building a wider and improved understanding of Canada’s history and growth from a trans-Pacific perspective.Our mission is to establish a Museum of Migration at a site of historical significance for Canadians whose families first arrived through Canada’s western portals, and to create a supporting national research network for an interdisciplinary and more inclusive interpretation of Canada’s history, including immigrants’ interactions with First Nations.We are currently involved in hosting events and/or partnering with community-based stakeholders to explore historic and current immigration stories from all across the Pacific, as well as the migration of those who crossed Canada from the east. We believe in taking an intercultural, intergenerational and collaborative approach to best represent the rich diversity of our communities.Job Description:(Please note this term position is supported by Canada Summer Jobs and is subject to confirmation of funding.)Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Event Planning and Program Assistant will develop and execute public events and programming to enhance community members’ understanding of migration into Canada from the Pacific and other parts of the world. These events will be designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of historic and present relations between immigrants and host communities, including First Nations. The student will work collaboratively to ensure programming attracts attendees of diverse age groups and cultural backgrounds, and to ensure engagement with new communities and partners is done respectfully.In addition to supporting PCHC-MoM’s own events, the Event Planning and Program Assistant will assist events co-presented by PCHC-MoM. These, for instance, will include a film screening of All Our Father’s Relations and educational workshop during explorASIAN 2018 in May, an interactive program animating the exhibition of “Our Journeys Here” at the Richmond Museum for Doors Open in June, and a new signature program called “Museum on Wheels” currently being planned.Over the course of the summer, the incumbent will assist in planning a new series of future educational and cultural events aimed at urban Indigenous youth, newcomers to Canada and refugees to share the complex history of relations on Canada’s Pacific Coast. This will include a plan for the coming year of educational programming aimed at connecting children and youth to immigrant seniors and First Nations elders for the purpose of sharing stories of Pacific Canada immigrant and First Nations relations.The Event Planning and Program Assistant will work with the Executive Director and others (board members and key volunteers) to identify opportunities for collaboration with new partners and help to extend our network, in particular with organizations representing newcomers to Canada and/or refugees, visible minorities, and First Nations communities.Responsibilities:The Event Planning and Program Assistant will be trained and involved with the following:

  1. Support the development and execution of PCHC-MoM events and programming, including our inaugural “Museum on Wheels” initiative;
  2. Assist in promoting PCHC-MoM to the public (with particular attention to newcomers to Canada, Indigenous peoples, and community members of visible minorities);
  3. Participate in our partner community events where PCHC-MoM is a co-presenter to deepen our relationships and extend our outreach;
  4. Identify new opportunities with organizations, groups and community members representing newcomers to Canada, refugees, visible minorities, and Indigenous peoples;
  5. Assist in planning a series of future educational and public programming to share the complex history of relations in Canada, particularly on the west coast;
  6. Support the development of new educational programming directed at children and youth to share stories of Pacific Canada immigration and First Nations relations by connecting them with seniors within these communities;
  7. Help to update our website, social media, newsletters, reports, proposals and recommendations for PCHC-MoM’s activities;
  8. Other duties as required.

Qualifications:The student will be mentored to refine his/her/their event and program planning, community leadership and office administrative skills. Tasks require significant emotional intelligence, interpersonal and intercultural communication ability.The successful applicant will be an even-tempered, friendly and skilled team player, able to work independently on occasion, and to multitask both in high-energy environments and quiet office environments. Knowledge of languages other than English is considered a major asset.The ideal candidate will:

  • Display a keen interest in and knowledge of issues of migration, immigrant and First Nations communities, and family/community history;
  • Preferably have experience planning educational and/or public events and programming;
  • Have good oral communication skills, including an ability to address individuals and groups;
  • Have good written communication skills, including the ability to write diverse materials such as web content, social media, newsletters, reports, proposals and recommendations;
  • Be proficient in using G Suite, CMS platforms (preferably WordPress), Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with preference given to experience on an organizational level;
  • Be a highly organized individual able to prioritize appropriately and adapt to changing circumstances when necessary.

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
